Matthew 4:18-20 (NKJV) – And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fisherman. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
Matthew 4:21-22 (NKJV) – Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Matthew 4:19 (NLT) – Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people.”
Who are some of the people in your life who have pointed you to Jesus or encouraged you in your walk with the Lord?
As people have been there for us to encourage us and point us to Jesus; by the power of the Holy Spirit, will we be willing to be that person in the life of someone else?
1. SAY YES TO THE SURRENDERED LIFE
Matthew 4:19 (NLT) – Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people.”
Matthew 4:20 (NKJV) – They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
Come – We come to Jesus as our Savior, Healer, and Redeemer
Follow Me – We follow Jesus as Lord and King of our Lives!
I have decided to follow Jesus -- no turning back.
Romans 10:9 (NLT) – If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
John 8:31-32 (NKJV) – Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Luke 9:23-24 (NKJV) – Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.”
2. SAY YES TO THE FIERY LOVE OF GOD
Acts 2:3-4 (NKJV) – Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Romans 5:5 (NKJV) – Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Matthew 4:19 (NKJV) – Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Make – create, fashion, cause to be
1 Peter 1:22 (NKJV) – Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart.
If I have not charity, if love does not flow from me, I am nothing, Jesus reduce me to love.
3. SAY YES TO THE CALL OF MINISTRY
Matthew 4:19 (NLT) – Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people.”
PEOPLE!
PEOPLE ARE FOREVER!
Ministry is all about people!
Every believer is a minister of Jesus Christ!
Every believer is called to carry the heart of Jesus for people into whatever sphere He has planted us.
Who is the Holy Spirit calling us to come alongside to encourage, to bless, to help them grow in the Lord? Who is the Holy Spirit calling to come alongside us, to encourage us, bless us and help us grow?
a. Be Available
Isaiah 6:8 (NKJV) – Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send Me.”
b. Be Prayerful
Colossians 4:2 (NKJV) – Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.
4. Be a Good Listener
James 1:19 (NLT) – Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
5. Be Present
John 1:14a (NKJV) – And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…
Jesus changes lives by the Holy Spirit working through people yielded to Him.
He is calling to us, “Will we be one of those yielded people in the life of someone else?”
Discussion Questions
1. Who are some of the people the Lord has used to point you to Jesus and encourage you in the Lord?
2. If they are still alive, have you expressed gratitude to them through a note, an email, a phone call or visit?
3. Would you be willing to be an encourager in the life of someone else?
4. What would hold you back from being used by the Lord to help someone else grow closer to the Lord?
5. Do you believe every believer is called to be a minister of Jesus Christ?
6. Would you be willing to say, “Yes!” to the Holy Spirit to empower you and anoint you to fulfill the calling that is upon your life?
