THE DIVINE EXCHANGE AT THE FEET OF JESUS ~ Pastor Luke Faw
Luke 23:47 (NLT) – When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
Luke 23:33 (NLT) – When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.
Luke 23:34 (NLT) – Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
Luke 23:44-46 (NLT) – By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 45 The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. 46 Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.
Luke 23:47 (TPT) – When the Roman captain overseeing the crucifixion witnessed all that took place, he was awestruck and glorified God. Acknowledging what they had done, he said, “I have no doubt we just killed the righteous one.”
Let’s look at this a little closer:
1. On the cross, Jesus took our sinfulness and offers us His Righteousness! (Mclean)
Isaiah 64:6a (NLT) – We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NLT) – For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
Isaiah 61:10a (NKJV) – I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.
I am made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ!
2. On the cross, Jesus took our shame and offers us His forgiveness and glory. (Kelle)
Isaiah 50:6 (NKJV) – I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.
Matthew 27:30-31 (NLT) – And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it. When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
Luke 23:34 (NLT) – Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for His clothes by throwing dice.
I can be forgiven and cleansed from shame by the blood of Jesus Christ!
Isaiah 61:7 (NLT) – Instead of shame and dishonor, you will enjoy a double share of honor. You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.
3. On the cross, Jesus died our death and He offers us Eternal Life
Luke 23:42 (NLT) – Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Luke 23:43 (NLT) – And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”
We can have an assurance of eternal life in our own lives.
1 John 5:12 (NLT) – Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.
2 Corinthians 6:2b (NLT) – Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.
