Restoration at the Feet of Jesus - Pastor Luke Faw

Luke 8:26-39 (NIV) - They sailed to the region of the Gerasene’s, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasene’s asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So, he got into the boat and left.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

1.      DON’T GIVE THE DEVIL A PLACE IN YOUR LIFE!

Eph. 4:27 (NKJV) - nor give place to the devil.

Eph. 4:27 (NLT) - for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NIV) - May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV) - Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:9a (NIV) - Resist him, standing firm in the faith

2 Corinthians10:4-5 (NIV) - The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2.      GET THE ENEMY OUT!

Be Saved

Matthew 12:43-45 (ESV) - “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest but finds none.  Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.  Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”

Humble Yourself

1 Peter 5:6a (NLT) - So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God,

Forgive Others

Matthew 6:14-15 (NLT) - “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Repent

Acts 3:19 (NLT) - Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.

Nehemiah 9:2b (NIV) - They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors.

1 John 1:9 (NKJV) - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Forgive Yourself

Psalm 103:12 (NLT) - He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.

Renounce

James 4:7 (NLT) - So humble yourselves before God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Break

Micah 2:12-13 (NIV) - “I will surely gather all of you, Jacob; I will surely bring together the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in its pasture; the place will throng with people. The One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate and go out. Their King will pass through before them, the Lord at their head.”

Bless

Deuteronomy 11:26 (NLT) - Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse!

Questions for discussion/reflection:

1.      What are the primary emotions you feel when thinking about the demonic?  (Fear, peace, victory, battle, etc.?)  Why do you think you have that feeling?

2.      Share an aspect from your life, or someone else’s (anonymously), where you have witnessed a “place” or “foothold” given to the enemy?

3.      Have you ever experienced or witnessed freedom from the enemy?  If yes, share about that experience.

4.      What steps to freedom seem most challenging to you?  (i.e. Repentance, forgiveness, etc.)  Why?

5.      Is there an aspect of your life that needs freedom from a foothold of the enemy?

6.      What could be keys to walking out that freedom?
