08.31.2025 | Why Work?
New Sermon Series: “Why?”
First installment: “Why work?” - Pastor Luke Faw
Eph. 6:5-9 (NKJV) - 5 Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; 6 not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.
9 And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that [a]your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
1. Embrace the gift of work.
Work is good. It is a gift from God.
Gen. 2:15 (NIV) - The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
Work isn’t a punishment, it’s holy unto God.
2. Work as a calling from God
Ephesians 6:7 (ESV) – rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man.
Our work is a calling from God and a place of ministry.
“There is an anointing for business.” Ed Silvoso
3. Work for God’s glory.
Ephesians 6:7 – as to the Lord and not to men.
2 Thess. 3:10 (NLT) – Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.”
If we don’t work, we shouldn’t eat, but we don’t work to eat!
Stewardship starts with surrender. Is our work surrendered to God?
Matthew 6:24 (NIV) - “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
We work for the Glory of God.
Our work becomes an act of worship.
Colossians 3:23 – And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.
Stewardship starts with surrender. Is our work surrendered to God?
1. Has work consistently been a negative in your life? Why or why not?
2. Have you ever thought about work as a gift, or opportunity from God? Why or why not?
3. What could be some aspects of calling, or opportunities for kingdom advance, in your work?
4. Is your work surrendered to Him? Do you work for money, or for the Lord? (are you stewarding work for the Lord?)
5. What needs to change for work to become worship for you?
