Why Purity? - Pastor Luke Faw

Why is sexual purity such a big deal to God and how in the world are we supposed to do it?  Join us Sunday as we talk about a topic very dear to our father’s heart, letting His word empower transformation in our lives.

1.      Your love for one another reveals Jesus.

John 13:34-35 NLT So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

John 15:9-13 NLT    “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

2.      Your unity brings the world to faith!

John 17:20-21 NLT 20 I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

Impurity brings disunity.

Purity with Humility brings unity.

What is Purity?

3.      Purity is loving Jesus while denying our flesh

1 Thess.4:3 NLT God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.

Matt. 5:27-29 NLT “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

4.      Pursue Purity.

1 Cor. 6:18 NLT  Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.

2 Timothy 2:22 NLT Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

-          It’s not just running away from something, its running toward someone- Jesus!

Purity code:  (Jim Burns),

In Honor of God, my family, and my future/current spouse, I commit my life to sexual purity. This involves:

1.      Honor God with your body.

1 Thess. 4:4 and 7 NLT Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor… God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? you are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore, honor God with your body.

2.      Renew your mind.

Romans 12:2  NIV Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Thess 4:5 NLT not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways.

2     Cor. 10:5b NIV  we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

3.      Turn your eyes from worthless things.

Job 31:1 NLT I made a covenant with my eyes
not to look with lust at a young woman.

1 Thess. 4:5-6a NLT …not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife

4.      Guard your heart.

1 Thess. 4:3 NLT God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.

Proverbs 4:23  NLT Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Song of Solomon 8:4 NLT Promise me, O women of Jerusalem,
not to awaken love until the time is right.

1 Thess. 4:4 NIV That each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,

5.      Believe God will provide a way of escape.

1 Corinthians 10:13. ESV  “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it”

“If you don’t believe escape is possible, you won’t look for it. But God has promised that he will provide it every time.” - Rachel Gilson

John 6:63 MSG  The Spirit can make life. Sheer muscle and willpower don’t make anything happen. Every word I’ve spoken to you is a Spirit-word, and so it is life-making.

Forgive others.

Repent for your part.

Forgive yourself.

Renounce the enemy’s work.

Break off any strongholds with the authority of Jesus.

Receive God’s blessing of purity before Him and grace to walk out newfound freedom and wholeness in this area of your life!

For discussion or personal reflection: (partially adapted from The Purity Code by Jim Burns)

1. Brainstorm and list positive results of following the Purity Code.

2. What are some of the negative consequences of not committing to and following the code?

3. Which of the four ways to follow the code do you find most challenging?

4. What are personal boundaries you feel you need to help yourself stay away from sexual immorality?

5. Has there ever been shame in your life associated with sexual sin?  Do you believe the blood of Jesus is actually enough to fully cleanse us when we repent?

6. For singles: Have you ever thought about making choices now, in light of possibly being married one day? (Does that seem like a really weird idea?) Take time to talk about the code and this question with a couple that is married to get a different perspective than your own.
