Children’s Ministry Director
John Newton
John Newton serves as the ZEAL Kids Director at JOY Church, where he leads a passionate team of teachers dedicated to helping children grow in their faith and encounter the presence of a loving Father. A member of the JOY community since 2002, John has served in Youth Ministry, Children’s Ministry, Outreach, and the Prayer Team. Originally from Evansville, IN, John began his 20-year teaching career with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 2002. During his tenure, he mentored fellow educators, facilitated school-wide initiatives, and developed a strong passion for planning, implementing, and refining best practices in education—experience he now brings into ministry.
At the heart of ZEAL Kids is the goal that every child takes steps toward owning their faith. John leads with this mission in mind, emphasizing that spiritual growth is a lifelong journey as kids continue to spend time with God, spend time with others, use their gifts, and share their personal history with God. Growing up in a loving family and church community, John encountered the power and presence of God’s love at an early age—experiences that have deeply marked his spiritual journey. He emphasizes that providing an environment where kids and families feel safe, seen, and loved within our community is our most meaningful and enduring work.
John retired from teaching in 2020 and is now enjoying a second career as a Project Manager with a local home builder. He is madly in love with his wife, Caryn, and the proud father of his two adult children, Olivia and Ben. John enjoys woodworking, fishing, and making memories with his family.
